DANGERS OF USING UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS
Unlicensed contractors and businesses may offer what appears to be a great deal. In the end those discounted prices can cost you much more. The old adage "If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is" best demonstrates how to avoid being scammed.
An unlicensed contractor that performs services is a criminal, Unfortunately, in todays fast paced environment, social media allows these criminals to appear like legitimate companies. Some go as far as using fake corporation names and sometimes fictitious license numbers. It is becoming extremely difficult to distinguish if they are legitimate or not. Consumers must do their due diligence before having any work performed in their homes and businesses.
These scams can have a great financial impact to the consumer. These unlicensed companies generally do not have a license to perform work and usually have NO liability or workers compensation insurance. Below are some good reasons NOT to use unlicensed companies:
1) If an unlicensed person falls or slips on your property, you the homeowner will be sued.
2) Manufacturer warranties of the product installed would more than likely be null and void if not performed by a licensed and approved installer.
3) Ask yourself: Who is this person? Is this company's employee a thief? Do they have a criminal background? What remedy is available if something goes wrong?
4) Who will honor the manufacturer Guarantee? Most unlicensed companies are referred to as fly by night companies. Here today - Gone tomorrow. BUYER BEWARE!!!
In many cases, there are limited investigators to pursue these criminals. Most people do not realize there is a problem until it is to late. Most of the time there is no recourse.
ARC Fuel Oil Company receives most of their work from customer referrals.
